Our family recently took a 5 night trip to El PEscador Lodge and Villas in Belize. We found this resort thru a Google search looking for warm locations to fly fish. My boys have caught the bug for fly fishing and my daughter and I did not want to go to a cool location to trout fish. I spoke with Yellow Dog Fly Fishing Adventures to get their advice on a place where both anglers and non anglers could enjoy a warm vacation, El PEscador was unanimous. Here is What to Do at El Pescador Belize If Not Fly Fishing.
We booked our flights and packed our bags for Belize and everything else was taken care of by El Pescador. We are here not to tell you about the fly fishing but what to do at El Pescador if not fishing. Be sure to check out our What to Pack when going to Belize so you are well prepared.
What to Do at El Pescador Belize If Not Fly Fishing
The moment you step off the plane in Belize City your travel is taken care of. You board a Tropic Air flight pre-booked for you, then meet a member of the El Pescador Team at the San Pedro Airport and taken by boat to the lodge. They greet you by name the minute you come off the boat and every employee makes an effort to get to know you.
Due to the special at the time, we booked the El Pescador all inclusive package, non angler, which includes 3 meals, an afternoon snack and all the domestic beverages. (Belize Rum, beer and sodas). You can get imports but there is a fee associated with this. We were perfectly satiated with the Belizan drinks.
I don’t fly fish so how did I spend my 5 days at El Pescador Fishing lodge?
- Kayaks and paddle boards are free to use for guests either on the ocean or the lagoon side. (we only went in the ocean)
- Bikes you can borrow to ride to the city center or along the beaches
- Golf Carts for Rent you can take into town or to Secret Beach
- Three Salt Water Pools to relax and swim
- Miles of beaches to explore
Free Fly Fishing Casting Lessons: Every day from 3-5 pm you can get casting lessons. My daughter decided to take advantage of this and on our last day of the trip, had a successful fishing trip with her dad and brother.
Non Fly Fishing Excursions:
- You can take multiple excursions to the mainland such as exploring the Mayan Ruins or Cave Tubing. (NOTE: Be sure to ask about the transportation time to the excursion some take long boat rides or require another small plane ride)
- Reef Fishing: One of our favorite family trips. We spent the Morning with our Guide Mario catching bait and then fishing for our lunch. Yes, fishing for lunch as your Lunch is made from what is caught on a spin rod.
Mario, also went snokelling and spared a few fish and found lobster for us to enjoy.
He then takes you to a private beach and makes the most amazing ceviche and bbq dinner.
The excursion is not over. We headed to the Barrier Reef and snorkeled Mexico Rocks.
There are numerous half day and full day snorkel trips offered from El Pescador. No matter which one you choose, guests are picked up from the El Pescador dock and brought on a guided snorkeling trip.
My Daughter and I choose the half day trip to Holchean Park though the worlds 2nd largest barrier reef. On our way to our second stop, the guide saw a single loggerhead turtle so we were able to jump out and swim with him. (Bucket List item)
We took a quick stop at Shark Ray Alley where yes you can swim with nurse sharks. (Not an original bucket list item)
On my final day I simply took a long bike ride and then relaxed by the pool and read a book.
Family Style Meals: Each Dinner is assigned seating and each night you are seated with other guests. This is a great opportunity to meet other El Pescador guests whom you will often leave as friends.
El Pescador’s vibe is relaxed and welcoming. They will bend backwards to accommodate their guests and you will find a smile on everyones face. The employee’s t-shirts say El Pescador Family and they immediately invite you to join their family.
While El Pescador is known for their Fly Fishing, non anglers will also have an amazing experience and easily pass their time while their angler partners enjoy a day on the water trying to catch a Grand Slam.
