Kid-Friendly Sites in DC’s Wine Country

Great Country Farms

Kids will just love Great Country Farms.  This is a 400-acre farm that offers everything from pick your own, to animal encounters, hayrides, a country store, mazes and more.

We happened to catch the beginning of the cherry season and took a short ride to the fields.  There is nothing better than a fresh cherry that has not been sitting on a grocery shelf for days.  Cherry picking takes some patience because they are small and the trees were tall, but we managed to get a nice collection.

There was so much to do, especially for preschool and school-age children. From mazes to obstacle courses, to feeding animals.  There is also a pond there if you want to try some fishing.  It is great to take a break from city living and allow the kids to get close to farm life and what it takes to get the food on the table.

Hit the country store on your way out for fresh fruits, veggies, and meat products as well as wines and treats.

Bluemont Vineyard

I know it does not seem appropriate to take kids to a winery. So many are now including family-friendly activities and areas that it is actually a family destination. Once the kids have explored Great Country Farms, head across the street to Bluemont Vineyard.  Established in 2007,  Bluemont is an extension of Great Country Farms.  The views were amazing from atop the hill.

There is plenty of outdoor seating areas where the kids can spread out too.

Historic Leesburg

Talk about quaint but adorable little towns in Loudoun County.  If you find yourself close by, Historic Leesburg is a great place to stop.  There is a lot of history complimented by a variety of stores and restaurants to fill an afternoon.

Download the Tour Leesburg App to explore the town.  A great way for the kids to get a history lesson while on vacation.

The Wine Kitchen

We stopped for lunch at The Wine Kitchen on King Street. A quaint restaurant with a small outdoor eating area, we arrived just in time for brunch.

I was quite impressed with the wonderful wine list and the flight selections you could choose if you just could not pick one wine to try.

The food menu was unique as well.  Combinations were unique but went well together.  I added a poached egg to my beet salad and it really worked.  We would love to go back for dinner sometime too.

Best Hotel in Loudoun County with kids

On our way, to Lansdowne Resort and Spa, we hit a few outlet stores.  The weather was turning so this was a great way to make the teens in our group happy.

The Lansdowne Resort and Spa is a AAA Four Diamond Award-winning resort.  It spans nearly 476 acres overlooking the Potomac River. It has golf, spa, pools, restaurants, bikes and workout facilities.  Unfortunately, the rain kept us from enjoying the outdoors but the kids will have a great time running off some energy in the pools, while you take a siesta after a tour of the wineries.

Check out the view from our room!

Several years ago we took a Girls Weekend Getaway In Northern Virginia and stayed here but the rooms have since been updated as well as the pool area which we were unable to see this visit due to the weather.

We work up early and headed back to Leesburg to grab breakfast at Shoe’s Cup and Cork.

The shop was originally a shoe shop and is a great place to stop by for coffee or a quick snack or breakfast.  I loved the presentation of the coffee and creamer.

The food came out quickly and the portions were very large.

The secret garden was closed when we first arrived but it is a great place to take the kids this summer.

Must See if Driving to Loudoun County From Richmond

Since we were headed west to Bluemont, we passed Marshall VA.  You need to make a quick stop at the Red Truck Bakery.  A nationally known bakery.  Whether take out or enjoy a bakery treat before you hit the road again, we definitely suggest this road trip stop.
